Conjoint Professor Christian Gericke holds an appointment in the School of Medicine and Public Health, College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing, at the University of Newcastle, where he also serves as Professor of Medicine and Clinical Dean. He is concurrently a Consultant Neurologist and Director of Research at Calvary Mater Newcastle and a Squadron Leader and Aerospace Neurologist in the Royal Australian Air Force. His academic qualifications encompass a Doctor of Medicine and Medical Degree from Freie Universität Berlin, a Master of Science from the University of London, a Master of Studies from the University of Cambridge, UK, and a Master of Business Administration from Deakin University. Gericke's research interests include aerospace neurology, epilepsy, ethics, health economics, health policy, medical law, and neurology. His fields of research cover neurology and neuromuscular diseases, health systems, and medical and health law.
Previous appointments in his career history include Professor of Medicine and Public Health at The University of Queensland since 2013, Professor of Public Health and Honorary Neurologist at the University of Exeter Peninsula Medical School from 2010 to 2012, Professor of Health Policy at The University of Adelaide School of Population Health from 2006 to 2010, and Clinical Director of Neurology at Queensland Health's The Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane from 2018 to 2023. He has received major awards and fellowships such as Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN) in 2022, Fellow of the European Academy of Neurology (FEAN) in 2020, Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in Neurology (FRACP) in 2018, Fellow of the American Neurological Association (FANA) in 2015, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCP Edin) in 2008, and Fellow of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine (FAFPHM) in 2006. Gericke's publication output includes 105 journal articles, 13 book chapters, and 38 conference papers. Key publications are 'The treatment gap for deep brain stimulation in Parkinson's disease: a comparative analysis of cost and utilisation in high-income countries' (Australian Health Review, 2024), 'Health Services Research' chapters (2024, 2023), and 'Non-invasive epileptic focus localization using EEG-triggered functional MRI and electromagnetic tomography' (Electroencephalography and Clinical Neurophysiology, 1998). He chairs the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists Therapeutics Committee, is Deputy Chair of the RACP Policy and Advocacy Committee, and leads the Australian Government Specialist Medical Review Council.
