Dr. Chi Truong serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Actuarial Studies and Business Analytics within Macquarie Business School at Macquarie University. His research centers on risk quantification and management, particularly disaster risk, systemic risk, operational risk, and risk mitigation strategies under climate change uncertainty. He develops dynamic factor models for risk management and evaluates adaptation to extreme events. Core areas include investment decision analysis under uncertainty, catastrophic risk modeling, and forecasting using dynamic factor models. He has secured funding from the Society of Actuaries ($53,000 for flood risk management and adaptation under sea-level rise uncertainty, using real options for coastal risk pricing amid economic growth and storm surge volatility), Asian Development Bank, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Toyota, and National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility. His research yields policy impacts, such as valuation methods for climate adaptation in Australian coastal councils, and organizational impacts via training programs.
Truong publishes in top journals including North American Actuarial Journal, Applied Energy, Journal of Environmental Management, Annals of Operations Research, European Journal of Operational Research, Energy Policy, and ASTIN Bulletin. Select publications are 'Adaptation time to climate-induced extreme events—impact of trend, seasonality, and interest rate stochasticity' (2025, North American Actuarial Journal, with M. A. Goldstein), 'Seasonality and valuation of renewable energy projects in a two factor model' (2025, Applied Energy, with S. Trueck, D. Pitt, R. Best), 'Timing is (almost) everything: Real options, extreme value theory, climate adaptation, and flood risk management' (2024, Journal of Environmental Management, with M. Malavasi, M. A. Goldstein), 'Optimal dynamic climate adaptation pathways: a case study of New York City' (2024, Annals of Operations Research, with M. Malavasi, H. Li, S. Trück, P. V. Shevchenko), 'Time trends in losses from major tornadoes in the United States' (2023, with J. Zhang, S. Trück, D. Pitt), 'Flood risk management and adaptation under sea level rise uncertainty' (2022, with H. Li, S. Trück, M. Malavasi), and 'Actual uptake of home batteries: The key roles of capital and policy' (2021, with R. Best, H. Li, S. Trück). Awards include the ABARE Prize and Macquarie University's Research Excellence Publications Award (2016). He reviews for journals such as Energy Economics, Journal of Environmental Management, and ASTIN Bulletin.
