Dr. Song Cher Pin is a Senior Lecturer in the Chemical Engineering Discipline at Monash University Malaysia's School of Engineering. He obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Monash University Malaysia in 2017, following a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering (Honours) from Taylor's University in 2013. After completing his doctorate, he worked as a Research Fellow at the same institution before transitioning to his lecturing role. Cher Pin's research centers on developing sustainable and green processes for chemical production. His expertise spans process design, enzymatic technology, separation engineering, oil and fats processing, and downstream processing of proteins, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals such as Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), and Climate Action (SDG 13).
He has published extensively, with 33 peer-reviewed articles, 5 review articles, 1 book chapter, and 1 conference paper. Notable publications include "Biodiesel production catalysed by low-cost liquid enzyme Eversa® Transform 2.0: Effect of free fatty acid content on lipase methanol tolerance and kinetic model" in Fuel (2021), "Direct recovery of enhanced green fluorescent protein from unclarified Escherichia coli homogenate using ion exchange chromatography in stirred fluidized bed" in International Journal of Biological Macromolecules (2020), "Environmentally Benign and Recyclable Aqueous Two-Phase System Composed of Distillable CO2-Based Alkyl Carbamate Ionic Liquids" in ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering (2018), and "Green, Aqueous Two-Phase Systems Based on Cholinium Aminoate Ionic Liquids with Tunable Hydrophobicity and Charge Density" in ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering (2015). Song Cher Pin has secured competitive research funding for projects including THOR Technology for refining and lipid engineering of crude algae oil (2024-2026), Feasibility Study on the Synthesis of Medium-Long Chain Triacylglycerols from Rice Bran Oil (2025-2028), and Biorefinery of defatted microalgae (2024-2026). Professionally, he serves as Chair/Co-Chair of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Malaysia (2025-2026), Member of the Board of Engineers Malaysia (since 2025), and holds memberships in IChemE, HRD Corp, and Advance HE. As an educator, he is Chief Examiner for units such as CHE3171 Bioprocess Technology, CHE2873 Introduction to Chemical Processes, and CHE3873 Pilot Plant Project.
