Chelsea Johnston holds a Master's degree in Classics from the University of Otago, completed between 2006 and 2014, with her thesis titled 'Beware of that Cup!: The Role of Food-tasters in Ancient Society,' supervised by Pat Wheatley. This work investigated the role of food-tasters in ancient societies and was presented at the Australasian Society for Classical Studies conference in 2014. She further earned a Master's degree in Secondary Education and Teaching from the University of Otago in 2015. Her academic background in Classics has informed her contributions to teaching and educational design, with skills in university teaching, lecturing, tutoring, research, curriculum design, curriculum development, academic writing, and public speaking.
Johnston's professional career at the University of Otago encompasses a range of teaching and administrative roles supporting academic operations across various faculties. She served as a tutor from 2011 to 2019, facilitating instruction in higher education. Concurrently, she taught Latin at Otago Girls' High School from 2014 to 2018. Administrative positions include Clinical Administrator in the Faculty of Dentistry from 2019 to 2021, Administrator roles in Campus Development, the Office of the Registrar, and Property Services in 2021 and 2022, Teaching, Research, and Postgraduate Administrator in the Department of Physiology from 2022 to 2024, and Postgraduate Administrator in the Department of Anatomy from 2024 to 2025. She has also acted as Tests and Examinations Invigilator since 2016. Currently, as Instructional Designer | Kaihoahoa Whakaako since 2025, she develops educational resources and supports curriculum enhancement within the Division of Health Sciences, particularly associated with the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences.
