Cassy D. Henderson is Professor and Chair of the Department of Accounting in the College of Business Administration at Sam Houston State University. She holds a Ph.D. and a BBA from the University of Texas at El Paso. Henderson joined Sam Houston State University over a decade ago, advancing through the ranks from Assistant Professor, as listed in the 2016-2017 catalog, to Associate Professor by 2021-2022, and to her current position as Professor and Department Chair. In this leadership role, she oversees the Department of Accounting, which offers programs including the Master of Science in Accounting. She has served as faculty advisor for the Beta Alpha Psi accounting honor society chapter since 2012.
Henderson's research specializes in accounting education, online and distance learning, the integration of artificial intelligence in accounting, and cultural influences on technology adoption. Her publications include 'How students use—and don't use—ChatGPT' in the Journal of Accountancy (2024); 'What motivates students to enroll in online business courses? The role of espoused national culture' (2024); 'The ChatGPT Artificial Intelligence Chatbot: How Well Does It Answer Accounting Assessment Questions?' in Issues in Accounting Education (2023); 'Crossroads Car Wash: When Family and Finances Collide' (2023); 'Accountability in Distance Learning: The Effect of Remote Proctoring on Performance in Online Accounting Courses' in the Journal of Emerging Technologies in Accounting (2022, co-authored with Ouadie Akaaboune, Leslie H. Blix, and Linda G. Carrington); 'Ryder Rides: The Synergy Between Accounting and Marketing' (2020); 'Going Postal: Analyzing Operating Income Performance of the Wheels of Fortune' in the Journal of Accounting and Finance (2018); 'The moderating effect of culture on e-filing taxes: evidence from India' in the Journal of Accounting in Emerging Economies (2017); and 'Does XBRL's Taxonomy Affect the Investment Performance of Nonprofessional Investors?' in the International Journal of Digital Accounting Research (2015). Her work has received over 340 citations. Henderson was awarded the 2025 Outstanding Educator Award by the American Accounting Researchers & Educators and has been recognized at Sam Houston State University's 14th Annual Academic Awards and with a College of Business Administration Service Award.
