Carolyn Herrington is Professor of Educational Policy and Director of the Educational Policy Center in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Florida State University. Her research and teaching examine the politics and policies of educational reform, emphasizing the role of the state in accountability systems, school finance, school choice mechanisms such as vouchers, charter schools, tax credits, and education savings accounts, and comprehensive children’s services. With over 50 articles, chapters, and policy reports to her credit, her work has appeared in leading journals including Educational Policy, Education Finance and Policy, Peabody Journal of Education, American Journal of Education, Journal of Education Finance, International Journal of Education Reform, and Educational Administration Quarterly. Notable publications include “Thirty-Seven and Counting: How Has AEFP Evolved from Its Origins?” (2013), “Editors’ Introduction: Randomized Controlled Trials Meet the Real World” (2019, co-authored), and “Educational Reform in Florida: Context, Substance and Politics” (1994).
Herrington’s career features prominent leadership roles across academia. She served as Dean of the College of Education at the University of Missouri-Columbia from 2010 to 2015. At Florida State University, she previously was Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and Associate Dean of the College of Education. She is a past President of the Association for Education Finance and Policy (AEFP, 2011-2012), served a three-year term on the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Governing Council for the Policy and Politics Division, and was founding Chair of the AERA Ethics Committee. Currently, she co-edits Educational Researcher and contributes to educational policy projects at the FSU Learning Systems Institute. In 2016, she was elected a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association, recognizing her substantial influence on educational policy research and practice.
