Scientia Professor Brian Uy holds the position of Scientia Professor of Structural Engineering in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering within the Engineering faculty at the University of New South Wales. He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering (Honours Class 1) in Civil Engineering and PhD from UNSW. Throughout his career, he has held prominent leadership roles, including Professor of Structural Engineering and Head of the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Sydney from 2016 to 2022, Professor of Structural Engineering and Director of the Centre for Infrastructure Engineering and Safety at UNSW from 2013 to 2016, Professor and Dean of the School of Engineering at the University of Western Sydney from 2007 to 2011, and Professor of Structural Engineering and Head of the School of Civil, Mining and Environmental Engineering at the University of Wollongong from 2004 to 2007. He has also served as EPSRC Visiting Research Fellow at Imperial College London, Anthony Mason Fellow at the National University of Singapore, and held positions at consulting firms including Ove Arup and Partners, Wholohan Grill and Partners, and GHD.
Professor Uy's research focuses on steel and composite structures over more than 30 years, along with critical infrastructure protection systems, deconstruction techniques, rehabilitation and strengthening techniques, structural health monitoring, structural systems, and sustainable construction materials. He has produced over 750 publications, including more than 300 journal articles predominantly in Q1 journals, garnering over 19,000 citations with an h-index of 75. Key publications include the edited volume Composite Construction in Steel and Concrete VII (2016, with M.A. Bradford) and chapters such as 'Local and interaction buckling of composite construction members' in Analysis and Design of Plated Structures (2022). His contributions have earned him numerous honors, including the Sir John Holland Civil Engineer of the Year Award (2019), John Connell Gold Medal as Structural Engineer of the Year (2021), Lewis Kent Award (2017), Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (2022), and Fellow of the Structural Engineering Institute (2024). Uy chairs Standards Australia Committee BD-032 on Composite Structures and BD-090 Part 6 on Bridge Structures, serves as Chief Editor (Asia-Pacific) for Steel and Composite Structures, and holds editorial roles on 14 international journals. He is President of the Institution of Structural Engineers (2026), Vice President of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (2023), and has supervised over 150 research students while securing more than $15 million in Australian Research Council grants.
