Dr Ben Stubbs serves as Senior Lecturer in the School of Communication, Media and Journalism within the College of Creative Arts, Design and Humanities at Adelaide University. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Canberra between 2010 and 2014. His academic research centers on creative writing, journalism and professional writing, and virtual and mixed reality technologies, particularly exploring the plurality of the travel writing form and immersive storytelling applications in VR and AR. Stubbs has a substantial career in higher education, including roles as course coordinator, lecturer, and tutor at the University of Canberra from 2004 to 2025. He is eligible to supervise Masters and PhD students as co-supervisor and currently oversees several doctoral candidates on topics such as comics and emotional literacy in mental health education, Royal Australian Air Force aviators' memory, reformatory schoolgirls in historical fiction, and memoir's role in climate crisis communication.
Stubbs has garnered recognition through multiple awards, including the UniSA Creative Innovation in Teaching award in 2024, Innovation in Research in 2022, and JERAA Innovation in Journalism in 2018. He has secured over $150,000 in funding for immersive media initiatives, encompassing $20,000 Teaching and Learning grants in 2017 and 2018, a $10,000 Ignite SA research grant in 2019, a $40,000 RTIS grant in 2020, and additional Yitpi Foundation and internal grants in 2021/2022. His key publications feature books such as Re-thinking travel writing: the journey of a genre (2024, Palgrave Macmillan, co-authored with Dr Lee Mylne), Creative and non-fiction writing during isolation and confinement: imaginative travel, prison, shipwrecks, pandemics, and war (2022, Routledge), The crow eaters: a journey through South Australia (2019, University of New South Wales Press), After dark: a nocturnal exploration of Madrid (2016, Signal Books Limited), and Ticket to Paradise: a journey to discover the Australian Colony in Paraguay among Nazis, Mennonites and Japanese beekeepers (2012, ABC Books). Notable journal articles include Practical guidelines for immersive journalism production (2025, Australian Journalism Review), It's all fun and games: Contemporary newsgames and journalism (2025, Australian Journalism Review), Behind closed doors: writing, confinement and conflict (2024, Ethical Space), and Virtual reality journalism: ethics, grammar and the state of play (2018, Australian Journalism Review). Stubbs contributes editorially as co-editor of special issues for TEXT journal, Australasia's leading creative writing publication, and as a member of the Ethical Space: International Journal of Communication Ethics board from 2022 to 2025. He holds positions on the Australasian Association of Writing Programs executive committee and the International Association of Literary Journalism Studies committee.
