Dr Belinda Guo is a Lecturer in Translational Oncology at the School of Biomedical Sciences, Pathology and Laboratory Science, University of Western Australia. She holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne awarded in 2014, a BSc (Hons) from the University of Canterbury in 2009, and a BSc from the same institution in 2008. Guo is the Snowdome Foundation and Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision Gunn Family National Career Development Fellow in Haematology. Her research centers on discovery and translational studies of myeloid blood disorders, with a focus on the genetic mechanisms that drive progression from indolent to aggressive disease behavior.
Belinda Guo has developed innovative cell biology and genomic tools, including a pioneering method to extract megakaryocytes from primary human bone marrow for genomic characterization. This work identified somatic mutations in megakaryocytes that correlate with progression to the fibrotic end-stage of myeloproliferative neoplasms. Her subsequent research on platelets has uncovered unique transcriptome profiles distinguishing chronic from aggressive disease phases, with results published and featured on the cover of the British Journal of Haematology. Notable publications include 'Megakaryocyte emperipolesis in myeloproliferative neoplasms: are neutrophils friends or foes?' (Journal of Leukocyte Biology, 2025), 'Imaging Flow Cytometry Detection of Cytogenetic Abnormalities in Circulating CD34+ Cells Predicts Leukemic Transformation in Myelofibrosis' (Cytometry Part A, 2026), 'Interleukin-4 modulates type I interferon to augment antitumor immunity' (Science Advances, 2025), 'The CALR mutations enhance the expression of the immunosuppressive proteins GARP and LAP on peripheral blood lymphocytes through increased binding of activated platelets' (British Journal of Haematology, 2024), and 'Transcription factor 3 is dysregulated in megakaryocytes in myelofibrosis' (Platelets, 2024). Guo has received 19 grants since 2017, including the Gunn Family National Career Development Fellowship ($390,000, 2019), Cancer Council Western Australia Project Grant ($120,000, 2023), and FHRI WANMA Ideas Grants ($100,000 each in 2024 and 2025), supporting advancements in blood biomarkers and leukaemia monitoring.
