About Balaji

Dr. Balaji P.S. is an Assistant Professor Grade-I in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, a position he has held since February 19, 2018. He obtained his B.E. in Aeronautical Engineering from Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, Anna University in 2008, M.Tech. in Machine Design from the National Institute of Technology Allahabad in 2012 (CGPA 9.3, University Second), and Ph.D. in Vibration Control from Curtin University, Australia in 2017, with his doctoral thesis titled 'An Analytical and Experimental Study on Wire Rope Isolators for Vibration Isolation of Equipment and Structures.' Prior to joining NIT Rourkela, he served as Research Assistant Professor at SRM University, Chennai from June 2017 to February 2018, Adhoc Faculty at NIT Warangal from July 2016 to May 2017, Assistant Professor at GITAM University from August 2013 to November 2013 and RK University from June 2012 to August 2013. He also worked as a Design Engineer at TAAL Technologies Ltd., Bangalore from July 2008 to August 2009. Additionally, he has developed the Materials and Wave Propagation Lab at NIT Rourkela, focusing on vibration control and energy harvesting devices using nonlinear designs.

Dr. Balaji P.S.'s research interests encompass nonlinear vibration control systems, vibration energy harvesting, mechanical metamaterials exhibiting quasi-zero-stiffness and negative stiffness behaviors, wire rope isolators, drone technology, and advanced machining processes including µ-ECDM. He has 32 publications to his credit, with a Google Scholar h-index of 15 and i10-index of 17. Key works include the highly cited review 'Applications of nonlinearity in passive vibration control: a review' (Journal of Vibration Engineering & Technologies, 2021, 272 citations), 'A review on application of mechanical metamaterials for vibration control' (Mechanics of Advanced Materials and Structures, 2022, 255 citations), 'Design of a metastructure for vibration isolation with quasi-zero-stiffness characteristics using bistable curved beam' (Nonlinear Dynamics, 2022, 142 citations), and 'Simultaneous vibration isolation and energy harvesting using quasi-zero-stiffness-based metastructure' (Acta Mechanica, 2023). As Principal Investigator, he has led projects funded by SERB ('Design and development of a mechanical metamaterial with Quasi-Zero-Stiffness behavior'), ISRO ('Design and Development of Vibration Isolators Using Negative Stiffness Mechanism'), and MeitY ('Capacity building for Human Resource Development in Unmanned Aircraft System'), along with consultancies for Coal India Limited and AMUL Industries. He supervises 11 Ph.D. students, has graduated several, and teaches courses such as Nonlinear Oscillation, Experimental Stress Analysis, System Dynamics and Control, and Mechatronics. His honors include Faculty Advisor Appreciation Awards in 2022 and 2023, a fully funded Ph.D. scholarship from the Malaysian Government in 2014, and memberships in ASME, SAE, and the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration.
