Dr. Azma Putra Azis is a Lecturer in the School of Civil and Mechanical Engineering within the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Curtin University, Australia. He earned his B.Eng. in Engineering Physics from Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesia (1997–2002), M.Sc. in Sound and Vibration Studies from the University of Southampton, UK (2003–2005), and Ph.D. in Sound and Vibration from the same institution (2005–2008), where his doctoral thesis focused on sound radiation from vibrating perforated plates, supported by the Rayleigh Scholarship. His academic career includes postdoctoral research fellowships at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), University of Southampton (2008–2009), senior lectureship (2009–2015) and associate professorship (2015 onwards) at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), where he taught courses such as Mechanical Vibrations, Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH), Engineering Dynamics, and Numerical Methods, consistently achieving teaching evaluation scores above 4.7 out of 5.0.
Dr. Putra Azis specializes in vibration, engineering acoustics, vibro-acoustics, noise and vibration control, and structural dynamics. His research emphasizes sustainable acoustic materials, particularly sound absorption performance of natural fibers like kenaf, pineapple-leaf, oil palm empty fruit bunch, sugarcane, and date palm, as well as microperforated panels and natural fiber composites for building acoustics. With 147 publications and over 2,600 citations, notable works include 'Sound absorption performance of natural kenaf fibres' (Applied Acoustics, 2018, 237 citations), 'Sound absorption of extracted pineapple-leaf fibres' (Applied Acoustics, 2018, 186 citations), 'Oil palm empty fruit bunch fibres as sustainable acoustic absorber' (Applied Acoustics, 2017, 170 citations), and recent contributions such as 'Recent progress in natural fiber reinforced composite as sound absorber material' (Journal of Building Engineering, 2024). He serves on the editorial teams of Sound & Vibration and the Journal of Engineering and Technology (JET). His innovations have earned multiple awards, including gold medals at UTeMEX for sustainable acoustic absorbers (2012, 2015), silver medals at international invention fairs like Seoul International Invention Fair (2012), and UTeM Academic Awards for journal publications (2013, 2015) and e-learning innovations (2016, 2020). Dr. Putra Azis has also delivered public lectures, such as on 'Smart Engineering for Renewable Energy Systems' at Universitas Diponegoro Summer Course (2025).
