Atnafu Lambebo Tonja is a researcher specializing in natural language processing. He earned his PhD in Computer Science from Instituto Politécnico Nacional in Mexico, where he was advised by Professors Alexander Gelbukh and Olga Kolesnikova, and he also spent time as a visiting student at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Previously, he served as a postdoctoral researcher at Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), collaborating with Professor Thamar Solorio on projects involving low-resource and multilingual NLP. He currently holds the position of Google DeepMind Academic Fellow at University College London’s Centre for Artificial Intelligence.

Tonja’s research centers on developing NLP tools, multilingual language models, evaluation benchmarks, and speech and multimodal systems for under-resourced languages, with a particular emphasis on African and Indigenous languages. His notable contributions include the paper “The Zeno’s Paradox of ‘Low-Resource’ Languages,” which received an Outstanding Paper Award at EMNLP 2024, and “MasakhaNEWS: News Topic Classification for African Languages,” which earned a Best Paper award at IJCNLP-AACL 2023. Additional recent works encompass benchmarks such as Afri-MCQA, CVQA, and EthioLLM, along with papers accepted at conferences including ACL, NAACL, NeurIPS, and EMNLP. His efforts focus on creating culturally aware resources that address gaps in AI accessibility for linguistically diverse communities.
