Atakelty Hailu is an Associate Professor in the School of Agriculture and Environment at the University of Western Australia, affiliated with the UWA Centre for Agricultural Economics and Development, UWA Oceans Institute, and Institute of Agriculture. He currently serves as Graduate Research Coordinator and Coordinator of the Master of Agricultural Economics Program. An agricultural and resource economist, Hailu's research focuses on efficiency and productivity analysis, whole-farm bioeconomic modelling, environmental policy design, agent-based computational economics, environmental economics and policy, recreational fishing management, conservation auction design, and non-market valuation. He earned a BSc in Agricultural Economics from Alemaya University in 1990, followed by a PhD from the University of Alberta in 1998. His career trajectory includes academic staff positions at Alemaya University from 1990 to 1992, a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Alberta from 1998 to 2001, and joining the University of Western Australia as a lecturer in 2001, advancing to Associate Professor. Additionally, he held an Invited Professor position at ENSAM/INRA in France in 2005.
Hailu has been recognized with several honors, including the Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award from the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society for 1996-1998, the Chancellor's Gold Medal for undergraduate academic achievements at Alemaya University, and the Publication of Enduring Quality Award from the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society in 2018.
