Arup Varma is Professor of Management and Frank W. Considine Chair in Applied Ethics at the Quinlan School of Business, Loyola University Chicago. He holds a PhD in Industrial Relations and Human Resources from Rutgers University, an MS in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations from Xavier Labour Relations Institute, Jamshedpur, India, and a BS in Economics from St. Xavier's College, Calcutta, India. Varma joined Loyola University Chicago in 1996 and has held progressive roles, including Distinguished University Research Professor from July 2020 to July 2023. He teaches courses such as Analytical Problem Solving in Organizations, Performance Management, Strategic Human Resource Management, Organizational Behavior, and Organizational Change and Development.
Varma's research specializations include performance appraisal and leader-member exchange, alternative dispute resolution, and expatriate categorization and adjustment issues. He has published over 125 papers in leading refereed journals, including the Academy of Management Journal, Personnel Psychology, Journal of Applied Psychology, and International Journal of Human Resource Management. Key publications encompass 'The new HCN-expatriate context: A multi-source, multi-method investigation of American HCN support for BRICS expatriates' (Varma et al., 2024, International Journal of Human Resource Management), 'Limits of ethical leadership and the role of ethics-oriented HRM system in managing Machiavellians' (Agarwal & Varma, 2025, Personnel Review), and the co-authored book Performance Management Systems: A Global Perspective, Second Edition (Varma, Budhwar, & DeNisi, 2023). He has also authored more than 50 book chapters and presented over 150 refereed papers at international conferences. Varma's scholarship has earned recognition through multiple awards, such as the Fulbright Professional Excellence Award (2018), Quinlan School of Business Researcher of the Year (2017, 2010/11, 2003/4), Graduate Programs Outstanding Teacher of the Year (2011/12), Dean's Service Award (2021), and Xavier School of Management Distinguished Alumnus (Academic) (2017). He previously served as Book Review Editor for Human Resource Management Journal (2001-2004) and continues on its editorial board.
