Dr. Arun Vuppaladadiyam serves as a Lecturer in the School of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at Curtin University, Perth, Australia, within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. He earned his PhD in Environmental Science and Engineering from Tsinghua University, China, in 2019, specializing in biomass conversion to bioenergy during his studies from August 2015 to July 2019. Prior to this, he completed a Master's degree in Energy and Environmental Engineering from Vellore Institute of Technology University between July 2010 and April 2012. His career trajectory includes a Postdoctoral Fellowship at RMIT University in the Department of Chemical Engineering from February 2023 to July 2024, a research position as a PhD student at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering from October 2021 to February 2023, and a consultancy role with the United Nations Development Programme India on plastic waste management from May 2020 to February 2021. These appointments underscore his progression in environmental engineering research and application.
Dr. Vuppaladadiyam's research interests encompass sustainable microalgae-based biofuel and bioenergy production, biomass pyrolysis and green hydrogen production, greywater reuse and associated environmental risks, waste-to-energy technologies, microalgae cultivation and metabolites, refrigerants' environmental impacts, anaerobic digestion for climate mitigation, thermochemical biochar production, e-waste recycling for rare earth metals, life cycle assessment of renewable energy systems, and emerging contaminants in biosolids. He has contributed extensively to the literature, with key publications including 'A review on sustainable microalgae based biofuel and bioenergy production: Recent developments' (Journal of Cleaner Production, 2018), 'Biomass pyrolysis: A review on recent advancements and green hydrogen production' (Bioresource Technology, 2022), 'A review on greywater reuse: quality, risks, barriers and global scenarios' (Reviews in Environmental Science and Bio/Technology, 2019), 'A critical review on biomass pyrolysis: Reaction mechanisms, process modeling and potential challenges' (Journal of the Energy Institute, 2023), and 'Anaerobic digestion based waste-to-energy technologies can halve the climate impact of China’s fast-growing food waste by 2040' (Journal of Cleaner Production, 2020). His scholarship has accumulated thousands of citations, reflecting substantial impact in renewable energy and waste management fields. Additionally, he holds the position of Associate Editor for Sustainable Energy Research, a Springer Nature journal.
