Loughnan's research examines criminal law and the criminal justice system, with particular emphasis on the interplay between legal doctrines, practices, institutions, and knowledge production. Key areas include constructions of criminal responsibility and non-responsibility, the integration of legal and expert medical knowledges, and the historical evolution of criminal law concepts. She is the author of the acclaimed monograph Manifest Madness: Mental Incapacity in the Criminal Law (Oxford University Press, 2012), which analyzes the doctrinal and historical dimensions of mental incapacity defenses. Notable publications also encompass Self, Others and the State (Cambridge University Press, 2019), 'Hyper-Knowledge and the Legitimation of Criminal Law' (Criminal Law Review, 2024), and 'Responsibility and Non-Responsibility in Criminal Law' (2018).
