About Anna

Anna Lok is a leading figure in Medicine at the University of Michigan, where she holds the Dame Sheila Sherlock Distinguished University Professorship in Hepatology and Internal Medicine, as well as the Alice Lohrman Andrews Research Professorship in Hepatology. She currently serves as Director of Clinical Hepatology and Assistant Dean for Clinical Research within the Department of Internal Medicine's Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Lok earned her MBBS from the University of Hong Kong School of Medicine in 1977 and her MD in 1990. She received her hepatology training under Dame Sheila Sherlock at the Royal Free Hospital in London, UK. After her faculty position at the University of Hong Kong until 1992, she moved to the United States and joined the University of Michigan in 1995.

Dr. Lok's academic interests center on the epidemiology, natural history, and treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C, risk stratification in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and the prevention and early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma. Her research receives funding from the National Institutes of Health, federal and private foundations, and pharmaceutical companies. She has authored over 600 publications on viral hepatitis and liver diseases, co-authoring five editions of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases Practice Guidelines on Chronic Hepatitis B, including the influential 2018 update. Prominent works include "Update on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic hepatitis B: AASLD 2018 hepatitis B guidance" (Hepatology, 2018), "EASL 2012 clinical practice guidelines: Management of chronic hepatitis B virus infection" (Journal of Hepatology, 2012), and "A comparison of entecavir and lamivudine for HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B" (New England Journal of Medicine, 2006). Ranked among the top 1% most cited scientists worldwide for 2002-2012, she has mentored over 60 fellows and junior faculty from around the world. Dr. Lok was President of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases in 2017, elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2022, and has earned awards such as the Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award from the American Liver Foundation (2015), William Beaumont Prize in Gastroenterology from the American Gastroenterological Association (2016), and International Recognition Award from the European Association for the Study of the Liver (2018). She serves as Associate Editor of Hepatology Communications and has held prior editorial positions with Hepatology, Journal of Viral Hepatitis, and Gastroenterology.
