Dr Anisha Fernando is a Lecturer in Information Systems at the School of Computer Science and Information Technology within the College of Engineering and Information Technology at Adelaide University. Her teaching has been recognised through a Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), which measures teaching and learning efforts against the UK Professional Standards Framework. She coordinates and teaches INFT 1016 IT Fundamentals, a first-year undergraduate course with a large diverse cohort, as well as postgraduate courses INFS 5093 Business Systems Analysis and INFS 5108 Business Process Modelling. She was part of the team awarded the 2024 Unstoppable Teaching Support Award for improving student engagement, learning experiences, and retention in undergraduate IT programs. She co-leads a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning project, funded by a UniSA Unstoppable Teaching and Learning grant for 2025-2026, to develop a value sensitive design-based learning tool aimed at enhancing ethical professionalism and data literacy among students. She strives to create meaningful learning experiences throughout students' journeys.
Fernando's doctoral thesis applied value sensitive design to explore privacy expectations and data flows in personalised search. Her research specialisations include technology ethics, particularly privacy and data ethics, information systems design, and the social impacts of emerging technologies. Eligible to co-supervise Masters and PhD students, she currently oversees doctoral research by Mrs Nimasha Thotawattage on blockchain data integration, interoperability, and governance, and by Hasni Gunasekara on blockchain adoption in developing countries, focusing on accountability, trust, and transparency in supply chains. She is a member of the Australian Computer Society's Professional Ethics Committee and co-convener of a community-based AI Ethics Book Club.
