About Ani

Ani Satz is Professor of Law and Public Health and Director of the Health Law, Policy & Ethics Project at Emory University School of Law. She holds additional appointments as Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Rollins School of Public Health, Senior Faculty Fellow at the Center for Ethics, and Affiliated Professor at the Goizueta Business School. Her academic background includes a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 2001, a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Monash University in 2001 (completed during a fellowship at Princeton University), and a B.A. (Hons.) in Political Science/Law & Society from the University of Tulsa in 1994, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with honors such as Best Honors Thesis in the Humanities Award and Alumni Association Top Ten Senior Award. Satz joined Emory in 2003 as Assistant Professor of Law, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006 and Professor in 2015, and previously clerked for the Honorable Jane R. Roth on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, lectured at Yale University and Monash University School of Medicine, and served as Visiting Associate Professor at Georgetown University Law Center in 2010. From 2018 to 2021, she held leadership roles as President-Elect, President, and Immediate Past-President of the Emory University Senate and Chair of the University Faculty Council.

Satz's research brings together law, policy, ethics, and business to address issues in human health, disability, and nonhuman animals, with specializations in health law, disability law, animal law, torts, and law and philosophy. Her work explores regulatory fragmentation, the gap between formal legal protections and lived experience, and tort law's role in promoting health care quality. Key publications include "Customary Corruption" (with Liza Vertinsky), 66 Wm. & Mary L. Rev. (forthcoming 2025); "Federalism, State Action, and Workers’ Medical Privacy," 100 Ind. L.J. (forthcoming 2024); "Rethinking Health Law Architecture," Am. J.L. Med. & Ethics (forthcoming 2024); "The Federalism Challenges of Protecting Workers’ Medical Privacy," 94 Ind. L.J. 1555 (2019); and "Animals as Living Accommodations," 24 Animal L. Rev. 1 (2018). She chaired sections of the Association of American Law Schools on Animal Law (2017), Law, Medicine and Health Care (2014), and Disability Law (2009), and was elected to the American Law Institute in 2016. Major awards include Fulbright Postgraduate Research Scholar and Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar. Satz teaches Torts, Health Law, Disability Law, Animal Law, Genetics and the Law, and Business Ethics; her scholarship has appeared in Michigan Law Review, Emory Law Journal, and Yale Journal of Health Policy, Law, and Ethics, and has been featured in Time Magazine, CNN, National Public Radio, and other outlets.
