About Andrew

Andrew Hargadon is the Charles J. Soderquist Chair in Entrepreneurship and Professor of Technology Management at the University of California, Davis Graduate School of Management, within the Business & Economics faculty. He specializes in the effective management of innovation and entrepreneurship, particularly the development and commercialization of sustainable technologies, management of research and development, and cross-disciplinary entrepreneurship. Hargadon earned his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Stanford University in 1998, an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1990, and a B.S. in Engineering-Product Design in 1986, both from Stanford. Prior to academia, he worked as a product designer at Apple Computer from 1990 to 1993 and at David Kelley Design (now IDEO) from 1988 to 1990. He began his academic career as an Assistant Professor of Management at the University of Florida from 1998 to 2001. In 2001, he joined UC Davis as Assistant Professor of Technology Management, advancing to Associate Professor in 2003, full Professor in 2009, and receiving the Charles J. Soderquist Chair appointment in 2010. He is also a Chancellor’s Fellow since 2005.

Hargadon founded the Center for Entrepreneurship at the UC Davis Graduate School of Management in 2006 and the Energy Efficiency Center in 2006, later evolving into the Mike and Renee Child Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. These centers promote entrepreneurship and innovation through programs bridging science, engineering, and business. His notable awards include the Olympus Emerging Educational Leader Award in 2009, the Vanguard Award for the Energy Efficiency Center in 2006, Professors of Manufacturing Fellow, Boeing Fellow, and Sloan Foundation Future Professor of Manufacturing. Key publications include the books How Breakthroughs Happen: The Surprising Truth About How Companies Innovate (Harvard Business School Press, 2003) and Sustainable Innovation: Build Your Company’s Capacity to Change the World (Stanford University Press, 2015). He has published extensively in leading journals such as Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Science, and Research Policy, including seminal works like “Technology Brokering and Innovation in a Product Development Firm” (1997). As a senior fellow at the Kauffman Foundation, Hargadon advances cross-disciplinary entrepreneurship, helping university scientists and engineers commercialize innovations.
