Andrew Adams is Professor of Piano and Director of the School of Music in the David Orr Belcher College of Fine and Performing Arts at Western Carolina University. He previously served as Associate Dean of the College of Fine and Performing Arts and Interim Director of the School of Music. Prior to his appointment at Western Carolina University, Adams held the position of Vocal Coach and Director of Collaborative Piano at Iowa State University from 2003 to 2006. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Music in Piano from the Kansas City Conservatory of Music, a Master of Music in Vocal Coaching and Accompanying from the University of Illinois, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Adams has contributed extensively to music education and scholarship through various editorial and publishing roles. He was a member of the editorial board of The Journal of Singing, the official publication of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, for twelve years. His scholarly output includes articles and reviews published in Piano Professional (England), The American Music Teacher, The Journal of the International Alliance for Women in Music, The Journal of Singing, and the North Carolina Music Educator. He edited the fourth edition of Resource Handbook for Academic Deans: The Essential Guide for College and University Leaders, published by Johns Hopkins University Press in 2023. In 2024, Adams received the Scholarly/Creative Activity Board Award from Western Carolina University to support the writing of his first book, slated for publication by Johns Hopkins University Press. Additionally, he has authored critical notes on Philip Glass's Études for university performances and participated in faculty recitals, including collaborative performances with colleagues in the School of Music.
