Andrea Kelton is Professor of Accounting in the Department of Accounting at Middle Tennessee State University’s Jennings A. Jones College of Business. She holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration with a major in Accounting from the University of Tennessee (2006), an M.S. in Accounting from James Madison University (1998), and a B.B.A. in Accounting from James Madison University (1997). Certified as a Public Accountant in Colorado, Kelton joined MTSU in 2017 as Associate Professor, advancing to full Professor. Previously, she was Assistant Professor of Accounting at Wake Forest University (2009–2017) and the University of South Florida (2006–2009). Her teaching employs innovative methods, including flipped classrooms with pre-recorded lectures using the One-Button Studio and Panopto, fostering interactive problem-solving sessions. She coordinates the Accounting Internship program (ACTG 6860) and contributes to graduate programs like the Master of Accountancy.
Kelton’s research focuses on accounting information systems and analytics, examining topics such as financial reporting quality, investor decision-making, corporate governance in Internet financial reporting, information presentation formats, and emerging technologies like AI in accounting education. Key publications include “The impact of corporate governance on Internet financial reporting” (Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, 2008), “Understanding the relation between financial reporting quality and audit quality” (AUDITING: A Journal of Practice & Theory, 2016), “The effects of information presentation format on judgment and decision making” (Journal of Information Systems, 2010), and “The ChatGPT artificial intelligence chatbot: How well does it answer accounting assessment questions?” (Issues in Accounting Education, 2023). She received the American Accounting Association Doctoral Consortium Fellowship (2005), multiple PwC INQuires Research Grants (2010–2012), Accounting Information Systems Section Midyear Meeting Best Paper Award (2016), AIS Section Distinguished Service Award (2022), and Bill & Kathy Jones Outstanding Faculty Award. Kelton serves as Associate Editor for the International Journal of Accounting Information Systems and on editorial boards for Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory and Current Issues in Auditing. She has held roles on committees including the AIS Section Research and Publications Committee and MTSU University Standing Committees.
