About Ana Claudia

Ana Claudia Arias is a Professor and EE Division Chair in Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, joining the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences in January 2011. She received her PhD in Physics from the University of Cambridge, UK, in 2001, a Master's degree in Physics from the Federal University of Paraná in Curitiba, Brazil, in 1997, and a Bachelor's degree in Physics from the same university in 1995. Prior to her academic appointment, she served as Manager of the Printed Electronic Devices Area and Member of Research Staff at PARC, a Xerox Company, from 2003 to 2011, and led the semiconductor group at Plastic Logic Ltd. in Cambridge, UK.

Professor Arias's research centers on the use of electronic materials processed from solution in flexible electronic systems, employing printing techniques to fabricate flexible large-area electronic devices and sensors. Her interests encompass physical electronics, power and energy, and flexible and printed electronics. She directs the Arias Research Group at Berkeley, which has produced PhD theses on topics including printed biodegradable wireless soil nitrate sensor nodes for precision agriculture, printed nitrate sensor nodes, solution-processed electronics for flexible hybrid systems, sensing systems using large-area printed organic electronics, printed flexible electrochemical sensors, wearable medical sensors enabled by printed bioelectronics, and printed organic light-emitting diodes for biomedical applications. Group alumni have secured positions at leading institutions and companies such as Intel, Apple, Meta, and Georgia Tech. She also directs the Berkeley Emerging Technologies Research (BETR) center and participates in the Berkeley Wireless Research Center (BWRC).

Arias has received major awards and honors, including election as an IEEE Fellow in 2025, National Academy of Inventors Fellow in 2025, Tampere University Honorary Doctorate in 2022, NAE Gilbreth Lectureship in 2017, FLEXI R&D Achievements Award in 2017, and Bakar Fellows Spark Award in 2014. Key publications include "All-organic optoelectronic sensor for pulse oximetry" in Nature Communications (2014), "A High Areal Capacity Flexible Lithium-Ion Battery with a Strain-Compliant Design" in Advanced Energy Materials (2014), "Materials and Applications for Large Area Electronics: Solution-Based Approaches" in Chemical Reviews (2010), "Wireless ear EEG to monitor drowsiness" in Nature Communications (2024), and "Printed Potentiometric Nitrate Sensors for Use in Soil" in Sensors (2022).
