Amjad Javed, M.Sc., Ph.D., is Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry. He holds secondary appointments in the departments of Biomedical Engineering, Cell, Development & Integrative Biology, Otolaryngology, and Pathology. Javed serves as Associate Dean for Research and Director of Postgraduate Education in the School of Dentistry, appointed associate dean in 2022. He is also Director of the Global Center for Craniofacial, Oral and Dental Disorders (GC-CODED). As a senior scientist in the Comprehensive Arthritis, Musculoskeletal, Bone and Autoimmunity Center (CAMBAC), he holds associate scientist positions in the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and other UAB centers. Javed earned a Master of Science in Zoology/Animal Biology in September 1992 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Physiology/General in March 2003.
His research specializations include craniofacial development, osteopenia/osteoporosis, genetics of mineralized tissue, cartilage development and degeneration, cleidocranial dysplasia, mineral metabolism, and regulation of bone adiposity. Javed has secured funding from the National Institutes of Health, including support for the Dental Academic Research Training (DART) Program. In 2025, he was named a Fellow of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. He is active in the International Association for Dental Research and other organizations, and serves on the editorial board of Critical Reviews in Eukaryotic Gene Expression. Key publications include "Genetic and Transcriptional Control of Bone Formation" (2010, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North America), "Myeloma cell–derived Runx2 promotes myeloma progression in bone" (2015, Blood), "Runx2 Deficiency in Osteoblasts Promotes Myeloma Resistance to Proteasome Inhibitor Therapy" (2022, Molecular Cancer Therapeutics), and "Runx2 Deletion in Hypertrophic Chondrocytes Impairs Osteoclast Differentiation and Endochondral Ossification" (2024, Bone). With over 12,000 citations across 140 publications, his work significantly influences bone biology and craniofacial research. Javed teaches courses such as Oral & Skeletal Biology and mentors predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees.
