Amanda Maddern serves as a Lecturer in the School of Allied Health and Human Performance, College of Health, at The University of Adelaide, with prior roles as Associate Lecturer since 2023. She holds a Bachelor of Physiotherapy from The University of South Australia and a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Education from Flinders University, and is currently completing a PhD at The University of Adelaide focused on exploring the potential of artificial intelligence within physiotherapy. Maddern has over 14 years of clinical experience as a Senior Physiotherapist and Clinical Educator at Griffith Rehabilitation Hospital since 2011, and as Director and Principal Physiotherapist at Adelaide Mobile Physiotherapy since 2019. Her expertise spans in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation in diverse areas including cardio-respiratory, musculoskeletal, neurological, orthopaedics, oncology, and gerontology physiotherapy. The challenges of rehabilitation settings have honed her skills in designing and implementing programs, including Physiotherapy Simulated Clinical Practice for third-year students, reflecting her commitment to advancing healthcare education and research.
Maddern's research specializations include physiotherapy, respiratory diseases, higher education, history and philosophy of education, musculoskeletal health, cardiac, respiratory, and vascular health. Key publications feature 'The Association between the Gut Microbiome and Development and Progression of Cancer Treatment Adverse Effects' in Cancers (2023, co-authored with J. K. Coller, J. M. Bowen, R. J. Gibson) and 'What Is Known About How Physiotherapy Students Make Sense of Movement as a Component of the Clinical Reasoning Process? A Scoping Review' in Australian Journal of Clinical Education (2022). Conference contributions include 'Entrustment and consensus assessment approaches in the evaluation of physiotherapy student competence' presented at ANZAHPE 2025 and Festival of Learning and Teaching 2024 (with J.
