About Alison

Alison Pert serves as Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Sydney Law School. She earned her LLB from the University of Manchester, LLM from the University of London, and PhD from the University of Sydney. In her teaching role, Dr Pert delivers courses on International Law and the Use of Armed Force, including LAWS6243 International Law I and LAWS6062 International Law and the Use of Armed Force. She also instructs public international law at the postgraduate level. Her academic interests center on international law, with particular specializations in the use of force and international humanitarian law. These areas form the core of her lectures and scholarly contributions at the University of Sydney.

Dr Pert has co-authored the authoritative textbook International Humanitarian Law with Emily Crawford, published by Cambridge University Press, with the second edition appearing in 2020 and the third edition in 2024. She co-edited Public International Law with Emily Crawford and Ben Saul, also published by Cambridge University Press in 2023. Among her other works is the article 'Proportionality in Self-Defence – Proportionate to What?', issued as Sydney Law School Research Paper No. 17/92 in 2017. In service to the academic community, Pert advises the University of Sydney Law School's Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court team, overseeing its participation and contributing to notable successes, such as the world championship win in 2021 and consistent strong performances in subsequent years. She is an associate of the Sydney Centre for International Law. Additionally, she engages in public outreach through presentations, such as her 2015 International Law Association talk on international rules on the use of force with implications for conflicts involving Russia-Ukraine and the South China Sea, and media discussions including an ABC interview on international law governing the use of force. Her work enhances understanding and application of international legal principles in academic and policy contexts.
