About Alexandru

Associate Professor Alexandru Nichifor serves in the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Melbourne, where he is Program Director for the Master of Economics since January 2025 and Deputy Director of the Centre for Market Design since August 2018. He was promoted to Associate Professor in January 2021, after joining as Senior Lecturer in 2016. Previously, he held a Lectureship at the University of St Andrews, UK. Nichifor obtained his PhD in Economics from Maastricht University in 2011, advised by Bettina Klaus, and a Research Master (DEA) in Financial Markets and Derivative Products from Toulouse School of Economics, advised by Jean-Charles Rochet. He was a Marie Curie Fellow from 2014 to 2016 and Visiting Assistant Professor at Stanford University in 2014-2015, hosted by Al Roth.

Nichifor's research centers on market design, encompassing generalized matching markets with transfers, simple market-clearing mechanisms including serial dictatorship and auction mechanisms, and their normative properties. Additional interests include game theory in assignment games, social networks and rankings, social choice, health economics, transportation economics, and experimental economics. His publications feature in premier journals like Journal of Political Economy, Theoretical Economics, Economic Theory, and Social Choice and Welfare. He holds an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA).
