Alex Thorpe is the Event Specialist in the External Engagement team at the University of Otago Christchurch campus, which is part of the Division of Health Sciences. In this capacity, Alex manages the planning and execution of end-to-end events that predominantly have an external impact on the community. This includes high-profile initiatives such as the comprehensive series of events celebrating the 50th anniversary of the University of Otago's presence in Christchurch in 2023. Additionally, Alex provides support for lower-impact and low-profile events organized by various academic departments across the campus.
Alex Thorpe serves as the key contact and coordinator for numerous public engagement and outreach activities at the University of Otago Christchurch. Notable events include the public talk "Cardiac health: What becomes of the broken hearted?" on June 11, 2025, "Public talk - Mental health: AI, psychedelics and your brain" on June 24, 2025, "Men's health in mid-life: Myths and truths" on July 3, 2024, "Women's health in mid-life: Happiness and hormones" on June 26, 2024, and "Public Talk Series: Ageing Well – Never too early, never too late." Alex also manages information evenings for the Master of Nursing Science program, such as the on-campus session on June 26, 2025, and online sessions. Inaugural Professorial Lectures organized under Alex's coordination feature prominent academics like Professor Philip Bird on "Tiny spaces, huge impact: Managing musculoskeletal health," Professor Martin de Bock, and Professor Caroline Bell on "Learning from disasters." Other events encompass the VIP Evening Showcase and End-of-Year Celebration for the 50th anniversary, as well as the Public Talk Series on Adolescent Health – Raising Mentally Resilient Teens in August 2023. Through these diverse activities, Alex Thorpe significantly contributes to bridging the university with the public, enhancing awareness of health research and educational offerings at the University of Otago Christchurch.
