About Alec

Alec Szalewski is Chair and Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at High Point University. He holds a B.A. from Lakeland University, an M.A. from the University of Central Florida, and a Ph.D. from the University of Central Florida with an emphasis on criminology. Prior to his appointment at High Point University in 2020, Szalewski served as a Graduate Teaching Associate at the University of Central Florida, where he completed his master's thesis titled 'Female Offenders of Intimate Partner Homicide' in 2017 and successfully defended his doctoral dissertation. During his graduate studies, he was awarded the Office of Research and Commercialization Doctoral Fellowship for the 2017-2018 academic year.

At High Point University, Szalewski teaches courses including probation, parole, and community corrections. His research contributions include peer-reviewed publications such as 'Factors Associated With Legal Decisions of Nonfatal Strangulation Cases With Forensic Evidence' in Criminal Justice Policy Review (2024), 'Friends and Relatives as Sources of Prescription Opioids for Misuse among Young Adults: The Significance of Physician Source and Race/Ethnic Differences' in Substance Abuse (2019, with Jason A. Ford, Corey Pomykacz, and Ty Schepis), 'Trading Places: Microlevel Predictors of Women Who Commit Intimate Partner Homicide' in Homicide Studies (2019), 'Place, Injury Patterns, and Female-Victim Intimate Partner Homicide' in Violence Against Women (2018), and 'Health Care Professionals, Rurality, and Intimate Femicide' in Homicide Studies (2017).
