Dr. Adam Friedman is a Professor of Social Studies Education at Wake Forest University’s Department of Education and Director of the Instructional Technology Group within the Office of the Dean of the College. He joined the faculty in 2007 following his academic training, which includes a Bachelor of Arts from the State University of New York at Geneseo and both a Master of Education and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. From 2014 to 2020, he chaired the Department of Education. In his teaching role, Friedman instructs undergraduate and graduate courses on secondary and elementary social studies methods, a graduate research seminar in social studies education, and oversees student teaching. He created and repeatedly taught the First Year Seminar Sports, Culture, and Geography. Additionally, he has led international educational programs, including a summer study abroad at the Worrell House in London and the LENS program in Nicaragua.
Friedman’s scholarly work centers on the integration of technology in social studies education, exploring how digitized primary sources and emerging XR technologies improve teaching practices, learner engagement, and student outcomes. He investigates enabling factors, barriers to adoption, and the influence of the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework on curriculum design, alongside the incorporation of religion in social studies curricula. A prolific researcher, he co-edited Research on Technology in Social Studies Education and has produced over 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters in prestigious venues like Theory and Research in Social Education, CITE-Social Studies, and the International Journal of Social Education. Notable publications include “Teaching with the C3 Framework: Surveying Teachers’ Beliefs and Practices” (2016) and “MMORPG Roles, Civic Participation and Leadership Among Generation Y” (2014). With more than 80 conference presentations and several research grants, his contributions have earned 457 citations.
