About Abhishek

Professor Abhishek Abhishek is a Professor of Rheumatology in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, and serves as an Honorary Consultant Rheumatologist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. He earned his medical degree from Seth GS Medical College in Mumbai, India, in 1999, followed by residency training in internal medicine at NSCB Medical College in Jabalpur, India. After initial medical training in Rhyl, Cardiff, and Liverpool, he joined the Rheumatology and General Medicine Specialist Registrar training programme in Nottingham from 2005 to 2013. During this time, he completed a PhD on calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD) in 2012 and obtained dual Certification in General Internal Medicine and Rheumatology in 2013, including a post-doctoral clinical research fellowship at the University of Birmingham. He held a substantive NHS Consultant Rheumatologist position at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge from 2013 to 2014 before returning to the University of Nottingham as Clinical Associate Professor of Rheumatology in 2014, achieving promotion to full Professor in August 2020. Previously, he led the musculoskeletal diseases and disability module for undergraduate medical education at the University of Nottingham from 2016 to 2018.

Abhishek Abhishek's research specializations encompass crystal arthritis, including gout and CPPD, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, epidemiology of autoimmune rheumatic diseases, clinical trials, clinical effectiveness studies using big data such as the Clinical Practice Research Datalink and UK Biobank, systematic reviews, classification criteria development, outcome measure development, and ultrasound imaging. He has authored over 95 research articles and contributed more than 15 book chapters on rheumatic diseases, with key publications including 'Gout - a guide for the general and acute physicians' (Clinical Medicine, 2017), 'Calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease: a review of epidemiologic findings' (Current Opinion in Rheumatology, 2016), and 'Association between low cortical bone mineral density, soft-tissue calcification, vascular calcification and chondrocalcinosis: a case-control study' (Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, 2014). As principal investigator, he has obtained over £5.4 million in research funding from sources including the National Institute for Health Research, Arthritis Research UK, Medical Research Council, and European League Against Rheumatism. He is co-principal investigator of the American College of Rheumatology/European League Against Rheumatism CPPD classification criteria project, co-chair of the OMERACT CPPD working group, founding co-convenor of the British Society for Rheumatology Crystal Arthritis Special Interest Group, and a member of the editorial board of Rheumatology (Oxford). Abhishek Abhishek has supervised or co-supervised 10 PhD students to completion and delivered invited lectures at British Society for Rheumatology, Gout Crystal and Hyperuricaemia Network, and European League Against Rheumatism annual meetings.
