About Abhiman

Abhiman Das is a Professor in the Economics Area at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA), a position he has held since August 2015. Prior to joining IIMA, he served over two decades in the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Department of Statistics and Information Management (Research Department), rising to the post of Director (General Manager). His academic qualifications include a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Department of Economics, Ph.D. in Population Studies, and M.Sc. (Gold Medalist) in Population Studies from the International Institute for Population Sciences, Bombay. Additionally, he holds an M.Sc. (Gold Medalist) in Statistics and a B.Sc. Honours in Statistics, with Mathematics and Physics, from Calcutta University. At IIMA, he was RBI Chair Professor in Finance and Economics from April 2016 to April 2022, Chairperson of the Economics Area from April 2016 to March 2018, Chairperson of the Doctoral Programme in Management from April 2018 to March 2020, and Chairperson of the Misra Centre for Financial Markets and Economy from April 2019 to April 2022.

Das’s research interests include Monetary Economics, Applied Econometrics and Time Series Analysis, Theory of Firms, Banking Efficiency and Productivity Analysis using parametric and nonparametric methods, Survey Data Analysis, Measurement of Macro-Economic Indicators, and Economic Development, with current focus on transmission of monetary policy, measurement of inflation expectations, economic development and banking, and efficiency and productivity of banking. He has received the Prof. C. R. Rao National Award in Statistics for Young Statisticians (2012-13), Prof. P. C. Mahalanobis Medal (2008) from the Indian Econometric Society, RBI Golden Jubilee Fellowship (2004), and Best Research Paper Award from the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance (2006). Notable publications are “Inflation expectations in India: Learning from household tendency surveys” (International Journal of Forecasting, 2019), “Mark-up and Efficiency of Indian Banks: An Input Distance Function Approach” (Empirical Economics, 2016), “Productivity and efficiency dynamics in Indian banking” (Journal of Applied Econometrics, 2012), and “Financial Intermediation Services Indirectly Measured (FISIM): The role of reference rate” (Statistical Journal of the IAOS, 2017). He serves as Associate Editor of The Data Envelopment Analysis Journal and is a member of the Indian Econometric Society.
