About Abel

Dr. Abel Sanchez is a Research Scientist in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and serves as Executive Director of MIT's Geospatial Data Center. He earned his Ph.D. from MIT and has established expertise in computer science domains including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data systems, and digital innovation. Over his career, Sanchez has led the global network architecture for the Internet of Things (IoT) at MIT, addressing large-scale computation challenges that exceed the scale of the world's computers, phones, and population combined. He directed simulations of U.S. critical infrastructure with the National Infrastructure Simulation and Analysis Center (NISAC). His work in data science began with supply chain information engineering, analytics, simulation, and visualization for Wal-Mart, Kraft, and SAP. He advanced global anti-counterfeiting efforts with Johnson & Johnson, SAP, and Altria through a track-and-trace system based on RFID standards, which continues to be used worldwide. For Ford Motor Company, he designed a global data infrastructure simulator to model components and identify data center optimization opportunities.

In cybersecurity, Sanchez conducted large-scale cyber attack impact analyses, designed Cyber Ranges for the Department of Defense (DOD), and pioneered the Negative Authentication system for the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA), modeled after the immune system's T-cell processes. He developed a machine learning situational awareness framework for financial fraud detection with Accenture. As founder and Chief Software Architect of the Open Source RFID platform, his systems are deployed by Samsung, NEC, NTT, Hitachi, Motorola, SAP, IBM, Microsoft, Sandia National Laboratories, MIT, and organizations across East Asia and Europe. Sanchez advises firms in the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East and acts as Principal Investigator on projects with SAP, Philip Morris International, Schlumberger, Ford, Dassault Systèmes, Microsoft, and IARPA in Big Data, geospatial analysis, multicore computing, and cybersecurity. He also collaborates on computational health research with Harvard Medical School. Through MIT Professional Education, he has taught graduate courses and programs in Data Science, Cybersecurity, Innovation, Generative AI, Blockchain, Cloud & DevOps, and Digital Transformation to professionals in 106 countries. His recent focus applies Generative AI to create interactive intelligent tutors and agents for retail, finance, education, industry, and government.
