Scientific Assistant in Transdisciplinary Research and the Science-Policy Dialogue
ATH Zurich ETH Zürich Hauptgebäude, Rämistrasse, Zürich, Switzerland
The  Transdisciplinarity Lab (TdLab)  develops and implements transdisciplinary teaching and research to support the sustainable development of society. Transdisciplinarity means focusing on societal problems and collaborating across disciplinary boundaries and between sciences and society. TdLab is part of ETH Zurich’s  Department of Environmental Systems Science (D-USYS) . Project background The Engage project, led by the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (EAWAG), aims to create a dialogue platform for a science-based discussion of complex trade-offs related to pressing societal problems amongst relevant stakeholders. Over the period of 2023 to 2025, a consortium of Swiss research institutes will develop different tools and structures to facilitate this dialogue.  Job description The two main tasks of this 80% position are to take care of the diverse stakeholder interactions of Engage and to help establish...

Software Developer in HPC/cloud for weather and climate
ATH Zurich ETH Zürich Hauptgebäude, Rämistrasse, Zürich, Switzerland
The  Center for Climate Systems Modeling  (C2SM) ETH Zurich and the  Federal Office of Meteorology  (MeteoSwiss) are leading an effort to improve our climate projection and weather forecast capabilities by adapting numerical models to new and emerging computing architectures. MeteoSwiss is responsible for providing climate information and weather forecast making a sustainable contribution to the well-being of the population and benefiting to the economy, science, and the environment. To this end, we maintain and develop state-of-the-art numerical weather prediction models through international collaborations. In order to provide the best possible forecast, intensive effort is invested in High Performance Computing and our operational weather forecasting system runs operationally on a dedicated CPU/GPU based supercomputer at the  Swiss National Supercomputing Centre  (CSCS). The position is available as of January 2023 (or as soon as possible...

PhD position in Volcano Seismology: Joint seismic tomography and stress change modeling at Kīlauea Volcano, Hawaiʻi
ATH Zurich ETH Zürich Hauptgebäude, Rämistrasse, Zürich, Switzerland
The  Swiss Seismological Service  (SED, www.seismo.ethz.ch) at the Department of Earth Sciences at ETH Zürich is the agency responsible for earthquake monitoring as well as hazard and risk assessment in Switzerland. The SED conducts a broad range of fundamental and applied research in earthquake science and is involved in several projects in the field of volcano science and seismic monitoring and imaging. Project background Within the framework of the SNSF-funded project “Anatomy and dynamics of volcanic systems: insights from a joint seismic tomography and seismicity analysis of Kīlauea Volcano” we intend to further develop novel approaches in waveform and array tomography to study subsurface magmatic processes. This proposal addresses the central theme of understanding magma generation and transport from the mantle through the crust to the surface. Specifically, this work will explore the magmatic system of Kīlauea volcano, a...

PhD positions in Climate Dynamics
ATH Zurich ETH Zürich Hauptgebäude, Rämistrasse, Zürich, Switzerland
The newly formed Climate Dynamics group at ETH Zurich, led by Prof. Robert Jnglin Wills, seeks 2 PhD students to investigate future changes in the large-scale circulation of the atmosphere, the role of ocean-atmosphere coupling in climate variability and change, and/or the influence of the atmospheric circulation on regional climate change and extreme weather. Project background Using a combination of climate modeling, physics-based theoretical understanding, and data science methods, our group pursues research on a broad range of topics in climate science such as: (i) patterns of sea-surface temperature response to forcing on various timescales and their influence on the atmospheric circulation, (ii) the role of mesoscale (storm-scale) processes in the atmospheric response to anomalous surface conditions, (iii) mechanisms and predictability of earth system variability on interannual and longer timescales, and (iv) persistent atmospheric circulation anomalies and...
