Postdoc Position on ecology of plant extinction
The University of Copenhagen Copenhagen Municipality, Denmark
The project Worldwide, at least 40% of vascular plants are threatened with extinction. Although land-use intensification has been identified as the overall main driver, it is much less known if extinction risk is predictable from species’ attributes. Identifying the biological, ecological and geographical features that make species vulnerable to extinction (i.e. extinction risk assessment) might help us to predict which species are most prone to decline and gain a more detailed understanding of the reasons behind declines. In practical terms, this approach allows for prioritization in nature conservation (single species, groups of species, particular communities) by focusing on a small number of indicator species categorized as at high risk, to prevent local biodiversity loss at low cost. The main aim of this research project is to determine a set of plant features (e.g. ecological niche, life-history traits, distribution range and local abundance, long-term...

PhD Fellowship in Computational CRISPR guide RNA design
The University of Copenhagen Copenhagen, Denmark
A PhD fellowship is available in the Computational Biology and Bioinformatics research group (https://ivh.ku.dk/bioinformatics), Center for non-coding RNA in Technology and Health (RTH), (http://rth.dk) at Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (https://ivh.ku.dk/english), Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at University of Copenhagen. The CRISPR field is developing rapidly and is continuously providing novel technological possibilities by several types of applications including gene editing and gene surgery. A key challenge is to pick the most efficient on-target guide RNA (gRNA) among several possible ones in a specific target region while taking the possible off-targets, i.e., unintended edits elsewhere in the genome, into account. This PhD project aims to make computational methods for on-target gRNA design while taking the off-target potential into account. The position is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. Start date is April 15, 2023 or as soon as...

Postdoc in Experimental Biophysics
The University of Copenhagen Copenhagen, Denmark
The Niels Bohr Institute Faculty of Science University of Copenhagen A postdoc position is open in the experimental group at the Bio-Complexity section at the Niels Bohr Institute. The research activity will focus on evolutionary and ecological dynamics in bacterial colonies. Our group and research You will be part of a group where we aim for an interdisciplinary mix of skills and backgrounds. The combined focus of our work is bacterial ecology with a focus on the 3D evolvement of biofilms. So, some of our questions are: How do bacteria self-organize in a natural – yet simplified – biofilm system? Or how do they spread to colonize unknown horizons? Beside the PI, the group pt. consists of 2 PhD students (physicists) and 3 MSc students. Current ongoing projects include biofilm growth in semi-soft media, spatio-genetic patterning in microbial colonies.  For more info on the group and our research, please...

Postdoc position in Primary cilia and pH-regulatory ion transport proteins
The University of Copenhagen University of Copenhagen, Nørregade, Copenhagen, Denmark
Postdoc position in Primary cilia and pH-regulatory ion transport proteins Department of Biology Faculty of Science University of Copenhagen Description of the project Most cells in our body contain antenna-like structures on their surface called primary cilia, which are important for regulating cell-cell communication and thereby the development and function of our organs. Defects in cilia can lead to severe human diseases called ciliopathies, which often affect the kidneys. The aim of this project is to investigate how two pH-regulatory ion transporters, NBCn1 and NHE1, are targeted to the primary cilium of mammalian kidney cells, and how they regulate pH within the cilium. NBCn1 and NHE1 regulate essential processes in our cells and organs and their dysfunction is linked to diseases like cancer and hypertension, but it is not clear how they get localized to and function at cilia. Likewise, intraciliary pH and its possible effect on ciliary function are...
