Research Assistant
Cambridge University Cambridge, UK
The University of Cambridge and MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit (Director: Professor Judy Hirst) wishes to appoint a research assistant to join Dr Alex Whitworth and the Mitochondrial Neurodegeneration group. The Mitochondrial Neurodegeneration group pursues an integrated programme of investigations which elucidate critical homeostatic mechanisms that regulate the integrity of mitochondria and maintain the normal neuronal functioning. In particular, the group uses Drosophila and cellular models to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis of various neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's Disease and Motor Neuron Disease. We are seeking to recruit a well-organised and experienced person, who will provide broad-ranging assistance to the lab including general lab management and maintenance, as well as providing technical and scientific support for a range of projects. The post-holder will perform routine procedures such as molecular cloning and Drosophila stock...

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Research Assistant to join Dr Mike Chapman's research group in the MRC Toxicology Unit. Previous work in the lab quantified the cell surface proteome of primary myeloma for the first time. Using this and other data we have identified immunotherapeutic targets and are establishing novel CAR-T and other immunotherapies against myeloma. We are interrogating these therapies using in vitro and in vivo models in order to optimise their efficacy and toxicity profiles. Ultimately, we will progress the most promising of these therapies to clinical trials through links and collaborations with Addenbrooke's Hospital and the Cambridge Cancer Centre Immunology Program. On the back of a highly successful beginning to this project we have received additional funding for a Research Assistant to join our team, to help advance this exciting project and develop novel CAR-T therapies for myeloma treatment. The successful candidate will work...

The laboratory of Prof. David Savage is seeking a research assistant to join an interdisciplinary team researching the links between obesity/ adipose tissue dysfunction and metabolic disease. The group has longstanding interests in rare human inherited disorders of adipose tissue, widely known as lipodystrophies. Remarkably, these diseases are strongly associated with almost identical metabolic disorders as those associated with obesity. Our lab studies humans, as well as using a range of model organisms and cell-based approaches to advance understanding of the mechanistic basis for these associations. The position is funded by the Wellcome Trust and will enable the successful applicant to join an international network using innovative approaches to tackle major challenges in human health. In this position, you will: - keep detailed and accurate records - play a leading role in laboratory management duties such as ordering, stock checks and organising lab inventories. - work...

We are seeking applications for this exciting joint post between the Cambridge Cancer Trials Centre (CCTC) and the MRC Biostatistics Unit (MRC-BSU). This position is part of a pan-European consortium (Cancer Core Europe) to improve the design and implementation of clinical trials. We seek a statistician interested in developing novel, more efficient clinical trial designs. Particular focus will be on the design of adaptive clinical trial arms, and clinical trials which incorporate novel biomarker endpoints (eg. liquid biopsy or imaging). The vacancy provides an exciting opportunity to make important contributions to clinical research, working with fellow statisticians and with clinical and translational researchers in Cambridge and across the Cancer Core Europe Centres (see below). The MRC Biostatistics Unit is one of Europe's leading biostatistics research institutions. Its focus is to deliver new analytical and computational strategies based on sound statistical principles for...

The Wallace group (https://chr1swallace.github.io) work on understanding mechanisms underlying immune-mediated disease through integrated analysis of omics data. We seek a statistician interested in human genetics who wants to apply machine learning to estimate cell population frequencies from bulk gene expression data. A common approach to identify dysregulated pathways in diseases is to compare gene expression profiles from healthy vs disease samples. However, the cellular composition of many biological samples is heterogeneous, and, given that many disease processes involve cell infiltration and expansion, such comparisons are confounded by changes in cellular composition. In addition, it is generally recognised that rare populations play a critical role in the pathogenesis of complex diseases, therefore, the ability to measure and interpret phenotypic changes between specific conditions at the cell subset level is critical to obtain a detailed understanding of the role of...

An opportunity has arisen for a talented statistician or probabilistic machine learning methods developer to join Dr Paul Kirk's group at the MRC Biostatistics Unit, Cambridge University, as part of the MIMAH (Minimising Mortality from Alcoholic Hepatitis) Consortium; see also: https://www.mimah.org Alcohol related liver disease (ALD) is responsible for more than 6000 deaths a year in the UK and costs the NHS £3.5 billion. Alcoholic hepatitis is a florid presentation of ALD in which patients present with jaundice and liver failure. Unfortunately, around 30% of people admitted to hospital with this condition will die within 3 months. The treatment of alcoholic hepatitis is complicated by the fact that there is inflammation within the liver whilst the patient is very susceptible to infection. As a result, treatment with drugs, such as steroids, which suppress the immune system may exacerbate the risk of infection. We will apply state of the art Bayesian clustering...

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research associate in Receptor Evolution to work with Prof Uta Paszkowski at the Crop Science Centre, starting between 1 August and 1 September 2021. The beneficial interaction of plants with endomycorrhizal fungi commences via mutual recognition in the rhizosphere. We identified a receptor complex that is required for perception of beneficial fungi by plants [Gutjahr, Gobbato et al., Science (2015), Choi et al., Nat Commun 2020], and also for plant development. Preliminary data suggest that the symbiosis signalling ability is a derived and not an ancestral trait. This project seeks to reproduce the evolutionary trajectory in order to define the protein features that condition signalling specificity. The projected work will involve a high-resolution metagenomics approach combined with functional validation in rice. Applicants must have a solid background in plant molecular genetics; available knowledge in basic bioinformatics, running...

The University of Cambridge wishes to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the research group of Prof. Edmund Kunji at the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit. The post holder will work within a programme focused on mitochondrial transport proteins, which are crucial for the functioning of mammalian cells. This project is funded by Apollo Therapeutics and focusses on the development of specific inhibitors of the mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC). MPC has emerged as a promising drug target for metabolic disorders, including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and diabetes, metabolically dependent cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. The human MPC is a heterodimer of two homologous small membrane proteins, forming two distinct complexes either MPC1/MPC2 or MPC1L/MPC2 [1]. The goal is to develop novel inhibitors of human MPC to treat the aforementioned diseases. Thermostability shift and transport assays have already been developed to screen for better and more specific...
