Position Description A postdoctoral scholar position is available at the Friday Harbor Laboratories, University of Washington https://fhl.uw.edu/. We seek a marine genomics scholar who can benefit from facilities and equipment being acquired as part of an NSF-funded Genomics at the Shoreline funding. The scholar is expected to conduct work appropriate for a marine field station and to reside on San Juan Island, working under the mentorship of a faculty member at FHL or at other UW campuses. Position Description We are seeking a postdoctoral candidate to investigate the 3D spatial distribution of cetaceans in the California Current using eDNA samples previously collected on large-scale surveys of the U.S. and Canada’s West Coast EEZ. This work is part of a larger, ongoing research initiative to improve methodologies allowing the use of eDNA to monitor the spatial distribution of marine mammals, especially targeting species that are vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts and difficult to track visually or acoustically (e.g. beaked whales). The postdoctoral candidate will work closely with their primary supervisor and collaborators at NOAA, focusing on the preliminary use of eDNA samples to characterize the 3D distribution of target cetacean species in the California Current, with the potential to expand to examine the concurrent distribution of prey species. Position Description In Alaska, coastal national parks which naturally support populations of anadromous salmon, including pink and chum salmon, may be influenced by hatchery-produced fish that stray from their natal origins into park streams. For example, the Indian River bisects Sitka National Historical Park and supports diverse biological and riparian communities typical of a small coastal river ecosystem including populations of resident and anadromous rainbow trout (steelhead), Dolly Varden charr, cutthroat trout, and other common coastal fish species.
